Changes are afoot in the bridge world around Stuart and Port St. Lucie.
With the recent retirement of Elsie Mentuck (at age 97) and the closing
of the games in downtown Stuart, it became evident that now is the time
for the community to come together to find a permanent solution and to
insure the future of duplicate bridge in the area.
After years of wandering from place to place (15 locations in the last
13 years) for the daily duplicate games, the bridge players of the Martin
and St Lucie Counties are well on their way to a new permanent home. In
conjunction with the Crossroads Community Church and the Peace Christian
Academy, the bridge community is going to construct an 11,000 square foot
steel building in Palm City for a permanent home.
As of late March, almost $60,000 has been raised. Reza and Georgiana Khatib
have generously agreed to match whatever funds are raised. All of this
activity has occurred over a 6 month period. It seems that some time in
2009, there will be a new bridge facility on the Treasure Coast.

On April 17th, the Clearwater DBC had 14 tables at an Individual Game as
a tribute to Alice Thiessen who plays nearly every day. The movement called
for only one board with any one partner so everyone played the Standard
American Yellow Card. ACBL sent a special certificate which was reproduced
on the top of a cake which was enjoyed by all. Our club president, Karl
Kristiansen, provided Clearwater DBC shirts as prizes for the A B and C
winners. Lots of food bridge and fun. Congratulations to Alice on reaching
the great age of 95. If you'd like to see the Clearwater Bridge Club's
web site, it's at home.tampabay.rr.com/rdo/cdbc

The Lake County Duplicate Bridge Club of Eustis Florida donated $1000 to
the Shriner Hospitals In this years paper crusade 2007. Jerry Elimore,
a 33 degree Mason as well as a Shriner spearheaded the idea of adopting
The Lake Shriner's annual Paper crusade as the lake County Duplicate Bridge
Club's annual charity. It is traditional for most bridge clubs to choose
an annual charity. But to the surprise of all the bridge club members the
generosity overflowed this year,as unknown donations were much larger than
usually this year So the Lake Duplicate bridge club raised $1000. The Lake
Shrine Club president Marvin Darity said this would be one of the biggest
contributes this year. Generosity is easy whenone thinks of the Burns hospitals
and the hospitals for crippled children the Shriners run nation wide. There
are a total of 22 Shriner hospitals .Three of them are just for burns, while
the rest are for children with crippling problems in USA ,Canada and Mexico
The Lake County Duplicate Bridge Club is located in Eustis on Key Street. It
is open every day of the week for Duplicate bridge players They have skill
levels from beginners to very top level players Anyone who has seen the
typical Shriner with their Fez hats in front of various stores during the
annual weekend in October 12,&13 of 2007 realizes what a great service
they render with their absolutely free treatment of children all over North
America. There burns unit in will airlift burns patients to Cincinnati
this is a very expensive ride from our area here in Florida. The Shriner
Hospitals have been preceived as places of tender care of children in need
of either severe burns or a crippling disability. Submitted by Richard
Tanner 2-VP of Lake Shrine club

HOSPITALITY IS OUR MOTTO:
JACKSONVILLE SCHOOL OF BRIDGE
Hospitality is the Name of Our Game at Sectional tournaments in Jacksonville.
The morning starts with pastries, bagels, deviled eggs, fruit coffee and
orange juice. Snacks are available all during the day and lunch was served
to approximately 200 people between sessions of the February Sectional.
Fried Chicken, Pasta, Subway Sandwiches, were some of the entrees....with
much of the food being donated by club members. A frequent guest at our
tournaments, Mike Edwards, became a Grand Life Master while playing with
long time partner Julie Bradley. Tournament Chairs, Partnership Chair,
and Caddies are all volunteers... volunteers are the life blood of our
tournaments. Thanks to all who make our club a fun place to play bridge,
plus the added benefit of friendships that last a lifetime.
