BEAT ALZHEIMERS … HUMANIZE THE ACBL
So saith Rodney Walker, a self-described “old man” who recently returned
to ACBL
after over 40 years’ absence. Rodney sent us an article called Strange
and Funny Things Happened on My Way to the Bridge Exchange.
He’s passionate about a volunteer activity he’s launched for himself at
On Top of the World, a retirement complex in Clearwater, which he calls
the Bridge Exchange. Rodney is sure he has the solution to a problem voiced
by CEO Jay Baum in one of his columns in the ACBL Bulletin last year--and
at the same time, a solution to the problem of countless retirees who may
not be getting all the mental exercise they can. Until they visit Rodney’s
Bridge Exchange! Rodney has gotten some other Clearwater ACBL members interested
in his quest to teach a whole new crop of beginners how to keep their minds
working by playing bridge. Rodney would love to get us all (yes, ALL of
us) volunteering to teach beginning or returning bridge players.

Rodwell smashes records, wins two masterpoint trophies Eric Rodwell’s epic
performance at the 2008 Fall NABC earned him two trophies with new names,
but representing familiar accomplishments.
Rodwell was on the winning team in the Mitchell Open Board-a-Match Teams
and the
Reisinger Board-a-Match Teams, won the Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs with Jeff
Meckstroth and was second in the Nail Life Master Open Pairs.
He won 623.75 platinum points at the Fall NABC to capture the Goren Trophy,
which replaces the Herman Trophy as the award for the player who earns
the most masterpoints of any pigment at a Fall NABC.
He is also the record-setting winner of the Soloway Trophy for Player of
the Year – awarded to the player who earns the most platinum points in
a calendar year. The Soloway Trophy is new.
Rodwell’s 2008 platinum-point total was 1017.31, the first time

2004 NABC Winners at New York City
Congratulations to all the Unit 128 Members who won Masterpoints at the
Nationals in New York. There were 265 Unit 128 players who took home a total of 4847.40 Masterpoints. Two of our players, Jeff Meckstroth and Eric Rodwell, were
the top masterpoint winners for the entire tournament!! A BIG Well
Done for that!!!
Five Unit 128 members were on the winning squad of the Championship Flight
of the Grand National Teams competition at the Summer NABCs in New York
City. Congratulations to Gary Cohler, Jeff Meckstroth, Eric Rodwell, Michael
Seamon and Barnet Shenkin, as well as to Jim Mahaffey of Unit 240. Click here for photo.

Unit 128 Winners at Mississippi Gulf Coast Regional, Biloxi
Many of our members attended the Mississippi Gulf Coast Regional on January
19 - 25, 2004 in Biloxi, MS. There were 1648 tables at the Regional and a total of 1012 players. Out of the 942 players who won Masterpoints, 44 were from Unit 128. Our players took home a total of 922.14 Masterpoints out of the 9971.30 that were awarded. The top 10 names are listed below. Unit 128 Players at District 10 Delta Dealin' Regional
Tunica, Mississippi
District Ten held their "Delta Dealin' Regional" on Sept. 15
- 22, 2003 in Tunica Mississippi. Out of a total attendance of 1152 players,a
small but mighty band of 21 "card sharps" were from Unit 128.

Unit 128 Players in Action at Coral Springs
The District Nine Regional in Coral Springs had an increase in attendance
to 1482.5 tables, which was up over the last time the tournament was held
there. Over 60% (706) of the 1164 players who attended were from
Unit 128 and 627 of them won masterpoints during the event. These
players won a grand total of just over 5322 masterpoints with Jeff Overby
(Key West) leading the entire tournament by winning 108.08 . Listed

Mini-McKenney / Ace of Clubs Masterpoint Races
The ACBL website ( http://www.acbl.org ) now has "up-to-date" standings for both the yearly Mini-McKenney
and Ace of Clubs masterpoint races for each unit posted. Click here to go to that page ( use browser back arrow to return here) and type in
128 to check out the races for our unit. At present these races are
updated on an irregular basis, but there are plans to update them every
month. These updates will probably take place sometimes between the
10th and 15th of the month.
